Join award-winning author Sara Leach in conversation with Rebecca Wood Barrett, to celebrate the launch of her debut middle-grade book My Best Friend is Extinct (Orca Book Publishers). One snowy winter, ten-year-old Henry Springs discovers a strange, prehistoric-like creature in one of his mountain town’s many snowbank tunnels. The creature, which Henry names Yarp, is seriously injured. Henry builds a secret snow cave and nurses Yarp back to health. But Yarp is not the only unusual beast lurking in the neighborhood. Where did these creatures come from and how can Henry keep his new friend safe?
The book is for readers 9-12 years’ old, and is illustrated by Cornelia Li.

Rebecca is an award-winning writer and filmmaker living in Whistler, British Columbia. Her short fiction has been published in Room, The Antigonish Review and Pique Newsmagazine. Rebecca is a passionate advocate for the literary arts, and enjoys supporting emerging and established writers in their projects through teaching, editing, career consultation and assisting writers’ critique groups in their formation. Her middle-grade children’s book My Best Friend is Extinct (Orca Book Publishers) releases March 2021.
